The History of Annunziata Church

The origins of Annunziata Church are shrouded in mystery, with its initial construction dating back to an uncertain period. However, the first documented references to the church appear in the 16th century. Over the centuries, the church has undergone significant transformations. In the 17th century, it was expanded to its current Latin cross layout, featuring a single nave with small chapels, a deep apse, and a transept. The grand dome, which crowns the intersection of the church, was completed in the following century.

Adjacent to the church, the hospital building developed between the 18th and 19th centuries. This hospital was established for charitable purposes, and notable architectural work was directed by Giuseppe Astarita, who designed the main altar with the assistance of Bartolomeo Vecchione. The altar was modified by adding four columns, enhancing its grandeur.

Since 2001, the church has been encased in scaffolding and barriers due to the need for restoration and safety work. In 2023, after more than two decades, funds were allocated to fully restore the site, which had long been in a state of disrepair. In 2024, the Annunziata Sanctuary and its bell tower were recognized as monuments of historical and artistic interest.

The Exterior

The facade of Annunziata Church, completed in the 18th century, replaced a more rustic exterior. It is elegantly divided into two orders, adorned with double pilasters supporting a curvilinear pediment flanked by pinnacles. At the center of the facade is a large window and a beautiful piperno portal. The doors, dating back to the 17th century, are notable for their finely carved wooden bas-reliefs.

The bell tower, also from the 18th century, rises majestically over three levels, resting on a rusticated piperno base. The second level features a mechanical clock, and the varying heights of each level give the tower a distinctive, vibrant elegance, accentuated by the classic gray piperno and orange brickwork. To the right, the 19th-century facade of the hospital completes the front of the piazza, seamlessly blending with the neighboring 18th-century facade while maintaining its own unique style.

The Interior and the First Work of Massimo Stanzione

The interior of Annunziata Church is a testament to Baroque opulence. The single-nave layout, with its transept and apse, is richly decorated. The wooden ceiling of the nave, intricately carved, bears the date 1615. Between 1618 and 1622, five paintings were added, created by artists such as Domenico Lama, Giovanni Vincenzo Forlì, Giovan Antonio Amato, and Massimo Stanzione.

Stanzione's first documented work, a small painting of the Presentation of the Virgin at the Temple, is part of this series. Despite its deteriorated condition, the painting reflects Stanzione's early style, influenced by Giovan Vincenzo Forlì and Fabrizio Santafede, and hints at his knowledge of Caravaggio's work and his early Neapolitan followers.

The fifteen chapels along the nave house altars sponsored by the city's prominent families. These chapels are adorned with paintings from the 16th to the 18th centuries, including a notable work by Massimo Stanzione in the first chapel on the left, and various tombstones with sculpted coats of arms.

The Chapel of the Madonna della Pace (Blessed Sacrament)

The largest chapel, the sixth on the right, is dedicated to the Madonna della Pace. This chapel is almost a church within a church, featuring a single nave with chapels, a transept, an apse, and a dome. It houses several 17th-century paintings by artists such as Carlo Sellitto, Nicola Cacciapuoti, and Giovanni Sarnelli, and boasts exquisite stucco decorations.

Between the Nave and the Presbytery

On the right side of the church, a grand gilded wooden organ from the late 17th century stands, followed by an elegant Rococo-style wooden pulpit. The areas connecting to the left transept contain panels from an early 16th-century polyptych depicting stories of the Virgin, and a contemporaneous marble tombstone.

The Presbytery

The transcept ends feature 18th-century altars and paintings. The apsidal area, enclosed by a balustrade of polychrome marble, is particularly noteworthy. The grand Baroque altar stands against the back wall, introduced by the finely crafted wooden choir stalls. The main altar showcases a rich painting of the Annunciation by Angelillo Arcuccio, a representative of the International Gothic style from the 15th century.
