Alte Kirche auf dem Rymelsberg

Alte Kirche auf dem Rymelsberg Langerwehe

Alte Kirche auf dem Rymelsberg

Nestled in the serene landscape of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Alte Kirche auf dem Rymelsberg in Langerwehe stands as a testament to centuries of history and architectural evolution. This charming old church, dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, invites visitors to step back in time and explore its rich past and unique features.

The History of the Alte Kirche

The origins of the Alte Kirche auf dem Rymelsberg are steeped in mystery and antiquity. Archaeological discoveries, including graves from the 6th and 7th centuries, suggest that this site was significant during the Frankish period. The church's earliest elements, found in the lower levels of the tower, date back to the Romanesque era.

In 1493, the church was transformed into the Gothic hall church we see today, featuring a three-nave, four-bay structure with a choir and a 5/8 choir closure, all underpinned by cross-ribbed vaults. This construction replaced an earlier Romanesque hall church. However, the church's journey was far from peaceful. It suffered significant damage during the Jülich Feud in 1543 and again in the wars of Louis XIV in 1690. Each time, the resilient community rebuilt and restored their beloved church.

Architectural Features

The Alte Kirche's architecture is a fascinating blend of styles, reflecting its turbulent history. The Baroque period saw the addition of a sacristy, while a lightning strike in 1846 altered the tower's spire from an octagonal structure to a simple pyramid roof. Despite these changes, the church retained its historical charm.

The devastation of World War II left the church in ruins, with most of its vaults collapsed. Yet, the community's determination saw it rebuilt by 1959, albeit with a simpler flat ceiling replacing the original vaults, except in the choir where the Gothic vault remains intact.

Exploring the Interior

Inside, visitors can admire the church's exquisite Rococo pulpit and the poignant crucifixion group adorning the triumphal arch. The stained glass windows, crafted by Hermann Gottfried in 1960, add a vibrant touch of color and artistry, casting a kaleidoscope of light across the interior.

The Organ and Bells

Music lovers will appreciate the church's organ, installed in 2014. Originally built in 1977 by Gebr. Stockmann Orgelbau for the Gregoriushaus in Aachen, the organ found a new home here thanks to the efforts of the Association for the Preservation of the Old Church in Langerwehe. With 11 registers, it fills the space with rich, resonant tones.

The church's bell, cast in 1960 by the Otto bell foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen, adds another layer of historical intrigue. Initially intended for the new St. Martin's Church, its tone did not blend with the existing bells, leading to its installation in the old church. Weighing 765 kg, it strikes a note of g', echoing across the landscape.

A Visit to Remember

Visiting the Alte Kirche auf dem Rymelsberg is not just about exploring a building; it's about immersing oneself in a living history.
