The tale of the Lichfield Clock Tower begins in the mid-19th century, a period when clock towers were springing up across England. Despite its impressive appearance, the clock faced numerous issues with accuracy until a complete overhaul by Joyce of Whitchurch in 1898.
As Lichfield grew, so did its traffic woes. The narrow layout of Bird Street and Bore Street, compounded by the position of the clock tower, caused significant congestion. In 1920, the 11-acre Friary estate was sold to Sir Richard Ashmole Cooper, who gifted it to the city for development. This led to the construction of a new road, The Friary, in 1928, necessitating the relocation of the clock tower.
The tower was carefully dismantled and re-erected 400 meters west of its original location, where it now stands south of Festival Gardens. In 1991, the tower underwent significant repairs and restoration, with the assistance of the Conduit Lands Trust, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, it is under the care of the Lichfield City Council.
