It took until 1880 to complete the church, and in 1887, the parish of St. Josef Güchenbach was established, encompassing the villages of Güchenbach, Hilschbach, and Überhofen, which later merged into Riegelsberg in 1939. The church was elevated to the status of a parish church that same year.
Undergoing several expansions and renovations over the years, the church saw significant developments between 1887 and 1888, including the addition of a transept and a choir. Architect Baurat Neufang was responsible for the tower's reconstruction in 1892/93, adding to the church's architectural grandeur. However, a devastating fire in 1949 led to the collapse of the roof and vaults, necessitating extensive restoration work from 1950 to 1951. Subsequent renovations were influenced by the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council, reflecting the church's adaptability and resilience.
Since 1946, St. Josef has also served as a pilgrimage church, attracting visitors to a replica of the Black Madonna of Altötting. This revered statue was brought to Riegelsberg by parishioners evacuated to Altötting during World War II. The Black Madonna was consecrated by Bishop Simon Konrad Landersdorfer of Passau and ceremoniously installed in St. Josef in 1945. Each year, from August 15th to 22nd, a festive pilgrimage week celebrates the Assumption of Mary, drawing pilgrims from near and far.

The church's organ, built in 1950 by the Lorraine organ-building company Haerpfer & Erman, underwent renovation in 2013/14 by Hugo Mayer Orgelbau. With 34 registers spread across three manuals and a pedal, the organ's electropneumatic action fills the church with a melodious symphony, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere during services and concerts.
After a comprehensive renovation completed in 2013, St. Josef stands rejuvenated, with a new roof, restored sandstone facade, and modernized lighting, heating, and sound systems. The church's windows have been carefully renovated and reinstalled with protective glazing, ensuring their preservation for future generations. The renovations, costing 900,000 euros, have breathed new life into this historic site, making it a beacon of faith and community spirit.
