Martinskirche Cuxhaven

Martinskirche

Martinskirche in Cuxhaven-Ritzebüttel stands as a beacon of architectural elegance and historical significance in the heart of Lower Saxony, Germany. This splendid church, a testament to the region's rich cultural tapestry, invites visitors to explore its storied past and appreciate its architectural beauty.

The History of Martinskirche

Constructed between 1816 and 1819, Martinskirche is a masterpiece of classicism, designed by the Danish architect Axel Bundsen. Its foundation rests on over 200 wooden piles, a necessity given the marshy terrain near Schloss Ritzebüttel. The church owes much of its existence to Amandus Augustus Abendroth, the Ritzebüttel administrator, who played a pivotal role in its development.

Named after Martin Luther, the church's design drew inspiration from the second Christuskirche in Wandsbek, which unfortunately succumbed to fire. The Hamburg Senate recognized the importance of this new place of worship, organizing a church collection in 1819 to support its construction. However, by 1828, the building required its first round of repairs due to subsidence.

The striking square tower, characterized by its decorative pinnacles, was added between 1883 and 1885, along with the church's bells. These features, along with the external buttresses, were essential for structural reasons. A significant renovation took place in 1906, replacing the decaying wooden piles with robust iron supports.

Exploring the Interior

Stepping inside Martinskirche, visitors are greeted by a spacious interior that can accommodate approximately 600 people. The dual-level galleries, a hallmark of the church's design, dominate the interior space, offering a unique vantage point for congregants.

One of the most intriguing features is the altar cross, dating back to around 1819. This piece serves as a poignant symbol of Jewish-Christian cooperation in the city, having been commissioned by Samuel A. Friedländer, the head of the Jewish synagogue community, on behalf of Abendroth.

The Organ's Legacy

The church's organ has a storied history, with its origins tracing back to parts from the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist in Hamburg. Initially installed in the nearby Maria-Magdalena-Kirche, the organ underwent several transformations over the centuries. Notably, renowned organ builder Arp Schnitger refurbished it in 1702.

In 1816, the organ found a new home in Martinskirche, where it was rebuilt and expanded by Johann Wolfgang Geyke and Johann Heinrich Wohlien. Subsequent modifications in 1885 by Friedrich Albert Mehmel and later in 1927 by Paul Rother expanded its capabilities significantly. The most recent renovation in 1972 reduced the organ to two manuals with 35 registers, ensuring its continued prominence in the church's musical life.

The Church Community

The evangelical Lutheran community of Martinskirche has been a cornerstone of Cuxhaven-Ritzebüttel since the early 19th century. Located at Regerstraße 41, the church's grounds include a 2.5-hectare cemetery established in 1826. This site features a chapel built in 1968, a war gravesite, and an Austrian war gravesite dating back to post-1864. Additionally, the community supports a kindergarten, reflecting its commitment to serving the local population.

Visiting Martinskirche offers a journey through time, where history and architecture intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. The church is not just a place of worship but a monument to the enduring spirit and cultural heritage of Cuxhaven. Whether you are an architecture enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a moment of reflection, Martinskirche welcomes you with open arms to explore its sacred halls and storied past.
