Situated on the right bank of the Saint-François River, near the Parc québécois des Voltigeurs, the site began to take shape in the summer of 1977.

Historic houses from the region were collected and transported to the site, thanks to generous donations from local families. To furnish these homes authentically, an appeal for donations or loans of objects and furniture from 1810 to 1910 was launched in August 1977. Despite financial challenges, including a critical funding shortfall in 1979, the project persevered with the help of a $35,000 grant from the provincial government. The Village Québécois d'Antan officially welcomed its first visitors on July 15, 1980, even though the site was not completely finished.

The Village Québécois d'Antan spans 2.8 kilometers of picturesque countryside, featuring 70 authentic 19th-century buildings, including a sugar shack, a one-room schoolhouse, the village doctor's house, a church, and a post office.
