Nestled along the serene eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt, Schloss Grub stands as a picturesque testament to Austria's rich history and architectural elegance. This enchanting castle, with its romantic allure and storied past, beckons visitors to explore the captivating tales and scenic beauty of the Salzkammergut region.
Schloss Grub's origins can be traced back to 1522, when it was first established as a farmhouse known as Gut in der Grub. Over the centuries, this humble abode evolved into a majestic castle, witnessing a myriad of historical events and changing ownership multiple times. In 1622, it came into the possession of the Eysselsberg family, who left an indelible mark on the region's history. Mathias von Eyselsberg, a notable figure, endowed the Trinity Altar in St. Michael's Church in 1652, while Christoph Eyssel von Eysselsberg established a crypt for himself in Hallstatt's parish church in 1658.
The castle's narrative took a significant turn in 1704 when it was acquired by Johann Gottfried Etzinger, the Salzverweser and market judge of Hallstatt. His son later contributed to the town's charm by donating the Trinity Column in Hallstatt's marketplace. Between 1864 and 1890, Schloss Grub found itself under the ownership of Ambassador Alexander Tschaffkini, who transformed it into the romantic vision we see today through a historicist redesign in 1868.
Throughout the 20th century, Schloss Grub witnessed further transitions in ownership, eventually becoming a shelter for the National Socialist People's Welfare during the Nazi era. Today, the castle remains privately owned, preserving its legacy while inviting admiration from afar.
The architecture of Schloss Grub is a harmonious blend of historical grandeur and romantic charm. The castle's distinctive hook-shaped structure is adorned with three round towers, each capped with conical roofs, and a square tower featuring a pyramid roof. These towers, though relatively modern additions, seamlessly integrate with the castle's overall design, creating a villa-like appearance that reflects its past uses.
The castle's steep roof is flanked by gables that rise gracefully on the sides, adorned with a stucco frieze that adds a touch of elegance. The connection between the main building and the chapel is ingeniously facilitated by the square tower, enhancing the architectural cohesion of the estate.
