Dolfinarium Harderwijk

Dolfinarium Harderwijk Harderwijk

Dolfinarium Harderwijk

Dolfinarium Harderwijk, nestled in the charming town of Harderwijk in the Netherlands, is Europe’s largest marine mammal park and a beloved destination for families, marine enthusiasts, and curious travelers alike. This enchanting park offers a unique blend of education, entertainment, and conservation, making it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the wonders of the marine world.

History of Dolfinarium Harderwijk

The story of Dolfinarium Harderwijk began in 1955 when businessman Frits den Herder, alongside his brother Coen, started collecting sea mammals. What began as a modest endeavor soon blossomed into a full-fledged marine park, opening its doors to the public in 1965. The aim was to foster respect and admiration for these magnificent creatures among the Dutch populace.

Over the years, the park expanded its collection and facilities. The iconic dome, a hallmark of Dolfinarium, was constructed in 1969, and by the following year, the park had already welcomed a million visitors. The 1970s saw further growth with the addition of new animals and enclosures, including the famous Icelandic orca, Gudrun, in 1976.

Despite facing financial difficulties and even bankruptcy in the early 1980s, the park rebounded and continued to thrive under new ownership. Significant investments were made, including the construction of a lagoon in 1997, which cost around 12 million euros. Today, Dolfinarium Harderwijk stands as a testament to resilience and dedication to marine life conservation.

Areas and Attractions

The park is divided into several themed areas, each dedicated to different species or groups of marine animals. These areas not only provide a home for the animals but also offer visitors an immersive and educational experience.
