Sint Jozefhuis

The Sint Jozefhuis, nestled in the charming city of Hoorn in the Netherlands, is a captivating blend of history and architecture. Known locally as Sint Jozefhuis; huis met topgevel, this building stands as a testament to the city's rich heritage and its commitment to preserving the past while embracing the present. Once a bustling home for orphans and the elderly, the Sint Jozefhuis now serves as a unique residential complex, offering a glimpse into the bygone era of Dutch care institutions.

The History of Sint Jozefhuis

The story of the Sint Jozefhuis begins in the 18th century when it was constructed as a charitable institution for the care of orphaned children from Catholic families. In 1770, a request was made to establish a home for impoverished elderly Catholics in Hoorn, with support from Amsterdam and Haarlem. By 1772, permission was granted to also accommodate poor youth, and construction commenced in 1773. A year later, the complex, initially named De Barmhartigheid, was completed.

In 1853, the facility came under the care of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Divine Child. Over the years, it underwent several transformations, including a significant renovation in 1884 that enclosed an open gallery to create more space. By 1896, the Sisters of Providence took over, and a new chapel was built. The name changed to RK Wees- en Oudeliedenhuis in 1904, reflecting its dual role as an orphanage and home for the elderly. This name remained until 1954 when it was rebranded as the St. Jozefhuis.

Architectural Features

The Sint Jozefhuis is a striking example of 18th-century Dutch architecture, characterized by its carré-shaped design, which encloses a serene inner courtyard. The façade features a slightly protruding central section adorned with a half-round pediment. This pediment is embellished with intricate acanthus leaves in the Louis XV style, transitioning into Louis XVI motifs, showcasing the evolution of architectural tastes over time.

The central pediment is crowned with a decorative vase perched on a white ribbon, flanked by garlands hanging from golden rings. The façade's windows are symmetrically arranged, each with gracefully arched lintels, adding to the building's elegant appearance.

The Interior Splendor

Inside the Sint Jozefhuis, visitors will find two beautifully preserved period rooms: the regent's room and the smaller regentess's room. Both rooms boast painted ceilings and walls adorned with 18th-century painted linen. The regent's room ceiling features an allegory of Charity, complete with putti—some with angelic wings, others with insect-like wings—surrounding two female figures, one holding the Horn of Plenty.

The regentess's room is equally enchanting, with its allegorical painting of Mercy above the marble fireplace. The rooms' mahogany mantels and painted panels, crafted by master painter H.G. van Kleef, reflect the artistic craftsmanship of the time.

From Past to Present

As the 20th century progressed, the role of the Sint Jozefhuis evolved. By 1970, the institution transitioned to lay management, and by 1982, it ceased to function as a care home. The building underwent a significant transformation in 1986, becoming a residential complex with 31 independent living units for both young and elderly residents. This innovative approach to communal living allows residents to enjoy shared spaces, fostering a sense of community within the historic walls.

Today, the Sint Jozefhuis stands as a symbol of adaptive reuse, blending its historical roots with modern living. Its restoration was supported by the National Restoration Fund, with the first subsidy check personally delivered by Mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven, marking a new chapter in the building's storied existence.
