After the closure of the Walsum mine in 2008, the Rheinberg mining field was not taken over due to the contentious nature of mining coal reserves beneath the Rhine.
By 2009, Bergwerk West employed approximately 4,200 workers. The last shift took place on December 21, 2012, and the mine was officially closed ten days later. At the time of its closure, Bergwerk West still employed 1,560 workers, with around 1,000 of them transitioning to other mines operated by RAG (Rheinische Aktiengesellschaft für Braunkohlenbergbau und Brikettfabrikation).
In its final year of operation, Bergwerk West produced approximately 2.5 million tons of coal. The highest annual production was recorded in 1993, with around 4.17 million tons. Until its closure, Bergwerk West was the fourth-last active mine operated by RAG.
