Château des Comtes

Château des Comtes Mouscron

Château des Comtes

The Château des Comtes, also known locally as Gravenkasteel, is a captivating historical gem nestled in the charming town of Mouscron, in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. This enchanting castle, dating back to the 15th century, invites visitors to step back in time and explore its rich history, architectural splendor, and serene surroundings.

The History of Château des Comtes

Originally constructed in the 15th century, the Château des Comtes served as the seat of the Ramées fief and was owned by the noble family de la Barre. As a testament to its strategic importance, the castle endured significant damage during the wars of conquest led by Louis XIV. The ravages of war left their mark on both the town of Mouscron and the castle itself.

In the late 18th century, the d’Ennetières family undertook substantial restoration work on the site. This included filling in the moats and refurbishing the façade in the Tournai style, characterized by large cross-windows in the Louis XVI style. The transformation turned the once formidable fortress into a more elegant manor house. By the end of the 19th century, the estate was sold to a French industrialist and subsequently rented out to farmers until 1961.

In 1945 and 1973, the commune acquired the castle and its grounds, classifying the main building and the site as heritage landmarks. Unfortunately, due to a lack of maintenance and ownership, the interior Louis XV style furnishings have not survived. Despite this, the exterior and surrounding buildings remain a testament to the castle's storied past.

Architectural Marvels

The Château des Comtes features a two-story brick main building with five bays. The stone elements were sourced from the Tournai quarries, adding a distinct regional touch to the structure. The northern side of the castle boasts a charming staircase turret with a pepperpot roof, while the southeast corner, near the kitchen, houses a well. These architectural details offer a glimpse into the castle's historical functionality and design.

The surrounding farm buildings have been contemporarily restored, with the former stable now serving as a concierge and the former carriage house and barn transformed into the Marcel Marlier Center. This center is dedicated to the renowned illustrator Marcel Marlier, known for his beloved Martine series of children's books.

The castle grounds are encircled by moats, which have been partially restored. These moats collect rainwater from the buildings and grounds, and are also fed by clean water from a separate drainage system originating from the 'Bois-Fichaux' area, cascading into the moat via a small rock waterfall. The water level is regulated by an overflow system, creating a picturesque and ecologically balanced environment.
