St. John's Church, locally known as Sint-Janskerk, stands proudly in the heart of Wierden, Netherlands, as a testament to the town's rich history and architectural heritage. This Protestant church, originally dedicated to St. John the Evangelist and St. John the Baptist, has seen centuries of transformation and remains a focal point of the community.

The Location and Historical Significance

Perched on the highest point in Wierden, St. John's Church was constructed in the 15th century, a time when this elevation was one of the few places safe from the winter floods. This strategic location not only offered protection but also became the nucleus around which the town of Wierden grew. For centuries, the church has been a beacon of faith and community, its presence a constant amidst the evolving landscape.

Architectural Evolution

The current structure of St. John's Church is a modern building from 1927, but its roots run deep into the medieval past. The oldest part of the church is the western wall, dating back to the early 15th century, which is integrated into the eastern side of the tower. The tower itself, a rectangular brick structure, was likely built around 1493-1494. Its distinctive design features a segmented arch entrance and a pointed arch window above, separated by brick water tables, culminating in a spire that transitions from a four-sided to an eight-sided shape.

Inside the church, one can still see traces of a vanished rib-vaulted ceiling along the walls, hinting at the grandeur that once was. Sadly, none of the original interior elements have survived, with only old photographs offering a glimpse into its past splendor.

The Bells of St. John's Church

The church tower houses a bell with a diameter of 97 cm, inscribed with the names Jesus, Mary, and John, and the maker's name, Gherardus de Wou, along with the year 1495. This bell, crafted by the renowned bell-founder Geert van Wou from Kampen, is a historical artifact in its own right. Despite the common misconception, the date on the bell does not indicate the tower's construction year. Historical records reveal that in 1521, three bells hung in the tower, all of which were broken and subsequently repaired through a community collection. The Van Wou bell, showing no signs of repair, was likely brought from elsewhere.

A Journey Through Time

The origins of St. John's Church trace back to 1433, when a predecessor of the Counts of Rechteren, the Lords of Almelo, founded a church in Wierden. The initial structure was probably a modest wooden chapel, which was soon replaced by a more substantial building. This early church also had a cemetery, where the less affluent members of the congregation were buried, while the wealthier individuals were interred within the church itself. This practice continued until 1829, when a new cemetery was established on Appelhofstraat.

The medieval church, likely bearing the name Sint-Janskerk, could accommodate around 200 worshippers and featured a cachot, or small prison. During the Reformation, this Catholic church was converted into a Protestant church. By 1824, the existing church had become too small, leading to the construction of a new church with 300 seats, known as the Waterstaatskerk. This church was expanded in 1848 to accommodate 500 people, with the addition of white pillars to support the structure.

The current church, built in 1929, was named St. John the Baptist Church and designed in the shape of a Greek cross. It initially had 650 seats, but was soon expanded with galleries to accommodate 800 people. In 2006, an annex called Hebron was added to support the church's public activities.

The Organ of St. John's Church

The church boasts a Pels organ, installed in 1944, which replaced an older Naber organ. The Naber organ, designed for a smaller congregation, was sold in 1942. The new Pels organ, with its electric-pneumatic action and 2516 pipes, faced initial challenges due to the wartime German occupation. Despite these hurdles, the organ was fully installed by 1957. However, it requires regular tuning and maintenance, with significant restoration work carried out in 1967.
