Its facade of alternating red and white stone blocks is a notable example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture. The church holds the tomb of Celestine V and sustained severe damage during the 2009 earthquake.
The Forte Spagnolo in L'Aquila is a Renaissance fortress with four bastions linked by walls up to 30 metres thick at the base. Built from the 1530s on the orders of the Spanish viceroy, it was designed not to defend the city but to control it, with its cannons aimed at L'Aquila itself.
