The origins of Slotje De Blauwe Camer date back to around 1400 when it was constructed by Claes de Voocht Peters Schaertszoon. The castle's name, shrouded in mystery, is believed to derive either from the blue slates that once adorned its roof or from a blue tapestry that decorated one of its rooms, which was sold in 1920. The first recorded mention of the castle appears in 1497, marking its long-standing presence in the annals of history.
Throughout its existence, Slotje De Blauwe Camer has seen numerous owners and undergone significant transformations. In 1412, the castle was sold to Herberen van Emmichoven, the grandson of Willem van Duivenvoorde. By 1420, it had come into the possession of the Johanniters, who expanded the castle by adding a tower around 1450 and purchasing additional lands. However, by the late fifteenth century, the Johanniters had departed.
The castle continued to change hands frequently in the sixteenth century. Notable owners included Claes Vierling, who built a hall at the back of the castle between 1544 and 1546, Thomas Gramaye in 1555, Daniël Henrici van Doerne around 1588, Andries van den Kieboom until 1593, and Jasper van Kinschot in 1593.

In a significant turn of events, on February 23, 1645, the Norbertine nuns of Sint-Catharinadal acquired Slotje De Blauwe Camer. Their provost, Balthasar Cruyt, purchased the castle from Adriaan Verelst, the bailiff of Alfen, Baarle, and Chaam. The nuns transformed the castle into a convent complex, constructing a monastery with four wings and a cloister corridor in the spring of 1647. The castle itself became the residence of the provost. By June 15, 1647, the first six nuns had moved in, followed by the remaining sixteen in October of the same year.
The grounds surrounding the castle were equally impressive, featuring a cemetery, an orchard, a vegetable garden, and an herb garden, all encircled by a moat. Over time, the nuns added more amenities, including three ponds for fish and a water well for the monastery's brewery. However, the practice of burying deceased nuns within the monastery led to unpleasant odors and the risk of collapsing graves, prompting Provost Van Amersfoort in 1760 to relocate the graves to the courtyard.
Slotje De Blauwe Camer is a stunning example of red brick architecture, adorned with sandstone accents. The castle features a stair tower with a four-sided spire covered in slates, topped with a weather vane. The masonry is decorated with various mason's marks, including St. Andrew's crosses, diamond, and heart patterns. The entrance boasts a gunport and a medallion with heraldic elements.
Parts of the castle, such as the stepped gables, are built in the late Gothic Renaissance style, while the monastery itself showcases cross windows and two-light windows. Within the cloister corridor lies a courtyard, and the gatehouse dates back to the early nineteenth century. The entire complex is surrounded by moats, adding to its picturesque charm.
Over the centuries, the buildings of Slotje De Blauwe Camer have undergone numerous renovations and restorations. The chapel, originally built in 1816 and consecrated on March 2, 1818, was rebuilt in 1903 and again in 1966. Between 1955 and 1959, the entire complex underwent significant restoration to preserve its historical integrity.
Today, Slotje De Blauwe Camer stands as a living monument, a testament to the resilience and dedication of those who have cared for it over the centuries. It continues to house the Norbertine nuns of Sint-Catharinadal, who have made it their home for nearly four centuries.
